About LiabilityGap
Most Canadians carry $1 million in liability coverage and have never once been asked whether that's enough. Meanwhile, Canadian courts routinely award more than that — sometimes many times more — against ordinary households.
LiabilityGap exists to cover that blind spot. We publish plain-English, source-cited explanations of what liability lawsuits actually cost in Canada, what home and auto policies actually pay, and how umbrella (excess liability) coverage closes the difference.
What we are — and aren't
We are an independent publisher and referral service. LiabilityGap is not an insurance broker or insurer. We connect you with licensed Canadian brokers. Estimates on this site are educational, not quotes. When you ask to be connected with a broker, we introduce you to a licensed insurance broker in your province, and that brokerage may pay us a referral fee. That fee never changes your premium, and no insurer or brokerage has any say in what we publish.
How we make money
One way: brokers pay us for introductions to people who asked to be introduced. We don't run display ads, we don't sell your data to marketing lists, and we don't accept payment for coverage recommendations. Read our editorial policy for how content decisions are made.
